Abraham Lincoln Vampire hunter and The Last American Vampire by Seth Grahame-Smith

What would you do if you were a vampire in the Grahame-Smith vampire universe?

The vampires in the Grahame-Smith universe are super strong, have regenerative healing abilities, and have enhanced senses. Those are all cool abilities and are the beginnings of what makes an outstanding superhero. Comic book readers everywhere at some point have dreamed they could protect the innocent by stalking evil in the night. Dispensing their own justice by hunting down and drinking the blood of only those who have it coming.

I feel like there are at least a couple vampire heroes out there in Marvel and DC Universes and they do a better job of describing what you should do if you want to be a vampire superhero.

That being said, how long can you keep that up before getting bored? These vampires can live forever without aging. I have to switch up my running route after 5 or 6 trips. What would I do after I catch my 500th bad guy? Wouldn’t they all start to blend together? Wouldn’t I lose faith in humanity’s ability to not be evil if all I do all the time for hundreds of years is drink the blood of evil people.

What I would do

The aspect about Grahame-Smith vampires that intrigues me most is their immortality. First, I would split my life into 25ish year segments and for each segment work at and master one particular profession. I would spend 25 years becoming a great architect. Then 25 years painting pictures. Then 25 trading stocks, 25 sculpting, 25 exploring the wilderness, 25 practicing medicine, 25 in politics, 25 teaching grade school. The list could be endless but when you get to the end, technology is bound to change significantly enough where the things you tried earlier are all done in a completely new way.

Why 25 years? It is mostly whimsical but I figure that is enough time to do something for 10,000 hours and not too much time where I would start to get a reputation that I couldn’t shake when I am ready to try something new.

Comment below with what you would do as a vampire.

Hot take

Henry Sturges is a coward. That guy has superhuman strength and super healing abilities and sits around in a basement sending a human with no abilities out to hunt and kill vampires. Everytime Henry sent Lincoln a new name I just thought, “Come on man, do something for yourself already. Abraham is awesome but can’t regenerate.”

The union club is no better. They orchestrated a grand conspiracy to get abolitionist politicians elected so they can then use them to fight the evil slave holding vampires? Again, “Do some fighting yourselves super strength vampires.” At least the southern vampires would fight in battles. The union vampires deserved to lose and I was not sad in the least when they were all hunted down in the second book.
